Shinjuku has several distinct exit areas. The southeast exit is not the south exit: look for 東南口 on station signs. The ward lists a public smoking area beneath the road viaduct beside the southeast plaza.

Before you walk there
Start with the exit name, then compare the ward map with signs at ground level. For the west side, use the metropolitan construction notice as well as the older ward directory. Do not treat a stored map pin as a walking route through construction fences. The southeast area is outside the station gates.
