Before you walk there
Find your train operator, platform and car number before walking to a room. The JR East guide requires the appropriate train tickets or an admission ticket to enter its Shinkansen area. Ask staff before crossing a transfer gate. Allow time to return to your boarding position; this guide does not estimate walking time.

- Street Smoking Penalty Warning: Major wards in Tokyo (Chiyoda, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Minato), Osaka City (citywide street ban), Kyoto, Yokohama, and Fukuoka strictly prohibit smoking on public streets outside designated booths. Patrol officers enforce on-the-spot fines of 1,000–2,000 JPY (up to 20,000 JPY in select zones). Heated tobacco devices (IQOS, Ploom, glo) are subject to the exact same street-smoking bans as paper cigarettes.
- Duty-Free Allowance & Airport Security Rules: Visitors aged 20+ may bring up to 200 sticks (1 carton) of cigarettes or heated tobacco sticks into Japan duty-free. Lithium-ion heated tobacco holders/chargers must be packed in carry-on cabin baggage only (never in checked luggage), and only 1 standard lighter per person is permitted on your person through security.
