Yokohama’s expanded ban on smoking in outdoor public places starts on 2027-1-19
Yokohama says it will extend the smoking ban to roads, station forecourts and similar places citywide from 2027-1-19. Distinguish the 9 smoking-prohibited districts in place as of 2026-10 from next year’s changes.
Hello, I’m Genki. Before heading to Yokohama, there are 3 things to check: when the rules start, where they apply and whether heated tobacco is covered. Yokohama’s guidance updated on 10-1 was checked on 2026-10-20.
What changes on 2027-1-19?
| Date and location | Differences confirmed in the city’s guidance |
|---|---|
| As of 2026-10 | 9 districts, including areas around stations, are designated smoking-prohibited districts |
| From 2027-1-19 | The ban expands to outdoor public places such as roads, rivers and station forecourts |
| The 9 priority districts after the new rules take effect | Violations are subject to a non-criminal monetary penalty of 2,000 yen |
| Roads and similar places outside the priority districts after implementation | Smoking is prohibited; this guidance specifies no monetary penalty |
After implementation, the current “smoking-prohibited districts” will be renamed “priority smoking-prohibited districts”. The area covered by the ban differs from the area subject to monetary penalties. No penalty does not mean smoking is permitted.
The existing 9 districts and next year’s expansion are separate matters
The current list of districts and boundary maps covers the areas around Yokohama Station, Minatomirai 21, Kannai, Tsurumi Station, Higashi-Kanagawa Station, Shin-Yokohama Station, Totsuka Station, Futamatagawa Station and Hiyoshi Station. Hiyoshi was added on 2026-8-1. Do not infer boundaries from station names alone; compare the official maps with signs on site.
Are IQOS, Ploom and glo covered too?
The city’s FAQ says heated tobacco is covered by the ban in the same way as cigarettes. Less visible smoke does not establish permission to use it on the street. On private property, separately check the facility’s own rules and the need to avoid exposing others to secondhand emissions.
Check smoking areas on official maps and signs at the entrance
To check smoking-area locations, use the smoking-area map linked by Yokohama. MOQLOG’s Smoking area map also lets you search by station or facility name, but a listing does not guarantee that a place is open at that moment. Check signs on site for closures, relocations and opening hours.
